Fall is my favorite time of year because, as my friend Renae used to say, “it’s as far away from summer as you can get.” Summer, with all its exposed skin and humidity and guilt over going to bed when the sun’s still up. Fall by comparison is the time of new beginnings. New pencils, new folders, new resolve to stay ahead of the reading.
As classes gear up, my advice to faculty and students all across America from preschool to PhD is the same: show up. Wear comfortable shoes. Be nice to your neighbor. Pack a lunch. Listen when someone else is speaking. Try not to cry. Hydrate.
I can’t wait to meet my new students on Tuesday!
