I capture the bullshit

Dodie Smith writes in I Capture the Castle: “I don’t like the sounds of all those lists he’s making—it’s like taking too many notes at school; you feel you’ve achieved something when you haven’t.”

Ever have a feeling your fiction writing is heading in this direction? Lots of notes and sketches but not much actual scene or story? I think all writers need really good built-in bullshit detectors to call themselves when they’re not really doing the work, because no one can bullshit like a fiction writer, and no one so readily wants to believe what isn’t true is truth.
